This year we are thrilled to announce that we will be supporting the fabulous local charity Cycling Without Age.
Even though we are a small company, it’s important to us to support the community in which we work. Followers of Ocean Flooring may remember our previous involvement with raising money for The Sussex Beacon and Brighton Youth Centre Skatepark. We have also been a supporter of Paddle Round the Pier for a number of years now.
Whilst this involvement will continue, we’ve decided to go further this year by choosing a charity of the year.
So why are we supporting a charity?
A couple of months ago, during a team meeting we were discussing whether we should invest further money in advertising. Retail has slowed down this year and whilst we’ve maintained a steady workload, without doubt the market has become harder. Therefore we are always looking at ways to increase awareness of Ocean Flooring.
Later that day, I went for a run along Hove seafront and saw one of the most heart warming sights. Two trishaws (three-wheel cycles with a passenger cab upfront) were coming towards me. In the first was a lovely lady with the biggest smile on her face waving at everyone she saw. That image of total joy in the woman’s face stuck with me for the rest of the day. There and then I decided that we could keep throwing money at advertising or we could start to give more to charity.
I contacted Cycling Without Age and met with Elly who is the Captain to find out more about this wonderful charity. Their volunteer pilots take local care home residents out on cycle rides to feel the wind in their hair. Their ethos is to encourage wellbeing and community and give residents the chance to enjoy a special outdoor adventure. Most haven’t had the feeling of freedom and joy of being on a bicycle for many years. Around 75% of their passengers are also living with dementia.
Cycling Without Age’s volunteer pilots are from all walks of life and Cycling Without Age are proud of the gender split of their pilots. They make each ride a fun, healthy, interactive experience for the elder passengers and get as much from the rides as the passengers.
I feel back in the land of the living. Violet 95
These two lovely ladies whooped with excitement all the way along Brighton seafront. So much so, I couldn’t help but join in! This precious hour brought a sparkle to their day, and mine. Dementia gave them a rather lost look upon collection at the home – then our bike took them to utter joy and delight with the wind in their hair and memory jogging moments like meeting Freddie the dog en route! The heart-felt thank you at the end was the cherry on top. Yup, this is a very special type of volunteering, I’m super proud to be part of it. Sally, volunteer cycle pilot
I loved it, just loved it. So nice to talk with so many people and the children and even the dogs! It’s magic being on a bike outside with everyone! Reg 98 & Beryl 90
So what are we doing for Cycling Without Age?
Well to start we have set up a fundraising page and have donated an initial amount to get this started. Throughout the month of January we will be donating money from our sales. For every square metre of flooring sold, we will donate £1 directly back into the charity. We will write to customers and tell them exactly how much their purchase has generated.
Further fundraising events will be held later on in the year and we will of course keep you posted once these have been booked.
So apologies to those magazines who were hoping to sell their advertising space to us but I’m sure you’ll all agree sometimes it’s nice to just give back.
